New Brunswick

A Lively City Dedicated To Learning And Healthcare

In the early 1700's, on the banks of the Raritan River, New Brunswick was founded and so named in honor of the English Royal House of Brunswick and soon became a major economic center for colonial trade and commerce.

Today, this thriving town serves as the county seat for Middlesex County and plays host to Rutgers - The State University of New Jersey (dating back to pre-Revolutionary War) as well as Johnson & Johnson's World Corporate Headquarters, along with several other marjor pharmaceutical companies. The town also boasts two premier academic hospitals, three, professional theatres, several four-star restaurants, a nightclub and a Hyatt Regency Hotel.

The culture here is quite diverse, which is dominated by the continuous flow of students. Easton Avenue plays an integral part in student life, offering frat houses and reasonably priced coffee shops, laundrymats, eateries and pubs, whilst Albany Street and George Street provide more upscale restaurants, theatres and shops.

Buccleuch Park and Boyd Park (along the waterfront) are popular places for picnics, running and touch football. Across the river in nearby Highland Park, Johnson Park is known for its picnic areas, playground, athletic fields, rollerblading path, a petting zoo and race track.

Just 25 minutes outside Manhattan, the New Brunswick area has become a popular location for commuters into New York City. It features its own exit off of the New Jersey Turnpike and a number of mass transit options including bus service and a major train station.

A massive reviatlization effort was recently launched to restore the downtown district, which started with the demolition of several old dormatories and other structures to make way for new residential and commercial space. It is also expected to pave the way for a new ferry terminal, which will provide direct service to the New York by 2008.
